If I could go back and tell my past self three things before getting my first pet, it would be these. Most new pet owners learn these the hard way — and their wallets (and pets) pay for it.
Mistake #1: Overfeeding (The Most Common Killer of Pet Health)
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the feeding chart on the back of your pet food bag is almost always wrong. Pet food brands intentionally suggest higher portions — it sells more food.
The real amounts:
- Adult dog (10 kg / 22 lbs): 1 to 1¼ cups of dry food daily, split into 2 meals
- Adult cat (4 kg / 9 lbs): ¼ cup twice a day
- Puppy under 6 months: 3–4 small meals per day
- Kitten under 6 months: 4 small meals per day
The test: You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs easily without pressing hard. If you can’t, they’re overweight.
Mistake #2: Skipping Playtime (The Silent Behavior Killer)
Behavior problems — barking, chewing, scratching, zoomies at 3 AM — are almost always caused by under-stimulation, not bad training.
The rule: 10 minutes of focused play = 1 hour of calm behavior.
For dogs: Tug, fetch, or puzzle toys. Mental stimulation tires them out faster than physical exercise. Our full breakdown is in the best dog puzzle toys guide.
For cats: Hunt-based play with feather wands, laser pointers (end with a treat!), or motorized toys. See our interactive cat toys guide for what actually engages indoor cats.
Mistake #3: Buying Too Much Too Fast
First-time pet owners spend an average of $800 in the first month — and 60% of that gear ends up unused.
What you actually need on day 1:
- Quality food + 2 bowls (stainless steel, dishwasher safe)
- Collar or harness + ID tag
- Bed OR crate (not both — pick one)
- 3 toys (one chew, one puzzle, one soft)
- Brush suited to their coat
That’s it. Everything else can wait until you know your pet’s personality.
